Fried Dough Filled with Feta Cheese

You may see this as just fried dough filled with feta cheese, but for me it’s so much more than that. This fried dough makes me very nostalgic.

When I was a little girl, growing up in Romania, I went to a gradeschool that was a 5 minute walk from our home. My sister and I would walk to school every day. On the left side of the school there was an old movie theatre and across the street a market where they would sell this fried dough and you could smell it for miles. Even now just thinking about it, the smell of this cheesy fried dough comes to my mind.

We used to go to the market often, many times at lunch, often after school, and the only reason was to buy this delicious fried dough. Sometimes after school we’d go to the movie theatre to watch a movie. The movies that used to play there were mostly Indian movies, and if you’ve never seen an Indian movie you should, they are all very sad and made you cry. We used to cry our heart out at these movies, but we loved them. On the way home from school or the movie theatre we would pass by a chocolate factory which was right across from our home. Oh the aromas there, can you imagine living across from a chocolate factory, the smell was amazing. Maybe that’s why I love chocolate so much today.

So if this seems like just plain fried dough with cheese to you, to me it’s so much more. To me it’s my childhood, memories that I cherish.
